A little history on how spiny oysters are formed:
When the mantle or inside of the shell of a spiny oyster secretes a mold, the mold then crystallizes into calcium carbonate. This forms a new shell layer and spines. These spines grow incrementally, particularly during periods of rapid shell growth. Scientists believe these spines probably evolved as a defense mechanism against predators, and they may also attract other organisms to settle on the shell, potentially providing camouflage.
