Picture Jasper is amazing!  Here is a bit of geologic history on how it forms.

Picture jasper forms through several stages. Sedimentary and hydrothermal processes where silica-rich sediments or volcanic ash accumulate and then water permeate into a rock, depositing minerals within the cracks and cavities of the rock.

These minerals, often include iron oxides, manganese dioxide, and other trace elements that create the unique colors and patterns that we see in picture jasper, and what gives it its name.
